2017 is here! How do you feel? I personally feel great and I am super glad 2016 is over and done with, I was over it in September already and we are finally here. In this post, I will be talking about 2017 makeup trends that you need to watch out for in order to achieve that on-fleek look (did we walk into 2017 with the word on fleek or nah?).

The finishing touch to any ensemble is a beautiful face, and the colours you use can make or break your entire look. The way you choose to do your eyes, lips, contours and cheekbones should not only make you stand out but also compliment your look and finish everything off.

2017 makeup trends seem to be heading towards the direction of no makeup (ironically) where everything is understated, fresh and clean.

No Makeup Makeup

If you are someone that doesn’t like caking, baking or complicated contouring then this is your year. One of the biggest trends to hit 2017 is the natural no-makeup makeup-look. Don’t be fooled though as sometimes trying to achieve a no-makeup makeup look can actually end up taking way more time than heavy makeup.

No Powder, No Problem

The year 2017 may be the end of the matte look *gasp*. I know right? Unimaginable. But yes, dewy, just-got-out-the-swimming-pool look is one you should be ready for this year, especially in summer. I know all my fellow oily skin girls are smiling at this. Throw that powder and setting spray away!

Strobing Over Contouring

Say goodbye to harsh contour lines and excessive blending. We’re going to have to give our beauty blenders a bit of a break this 2017 because contouring is starting to look like a thing of the past. Strobing (or “non-touring” as Kim Kardashian put it) is basically just a fancier new term for highlighting. Extra highlighting gives you that dewy, shimmery, youthful look that is perfect for summer and upcoming early autumn.

Instead of using concealer darker and lighter than your skin tone in order to create that chiselled Kim K look,  you simply use your natural skin tone as the “darker concealer” and use highlighter to create the perfect strobe look. Expect a tutorial on how to achieve this look on my YouTube channel soon.

The Copper Eyelid

Fierce! That’s what I think about this look. I am looking forward to seeing how people will rock this look and switch it up and make it their own. In order to achieve this look and make it pop everything else has to be absolutely minimal. The usual foundation and concealer is alright but keeping highlighting (strobing) to a bare minimum is key, the eyes should do all the talking with this look.

Gloss Boss

Like I mentioned before, 2016 may just have been the end of the year of matte. Gloss is back and back in a whole new way. The wet look goes beyond just the dewy foundation look and is now being incorporated into the eye look as well with shimmering eye-shadow.

I honestly see the glossy eyelids as more of an editorial trend rather than an actual practical everyday-girl-on-the-street look. But you never know these days.

Draping in Pink

If there’s anything I have noticed from all these new trends that are going to be popping up in 2017, it’s that we are going to have a completely different “makeup vocab” by the time we approach 2018. Introducing draping.

Draping is wearing your blush up on the corner of your cheeks and on the side of your eyes, past your eyebrows into the temples. Rumour has it this may be the new contouring but I disagree. If anything is going to overtake the contouring trend, strobing is.

The trending colour for draping though seems to be pink. A colour I mentioned is also going to be trending in the fashion scene, read the blog post on 2017 fashion trends here.

Natural Eyebrows

Ssy goodbye to those tweezers and threading appointments because natural, thick eyebrows are back! Brows without any brow liner that are bearly brushed seem to be making more and more of an appearance these days and I am loving it. Eyebrows take way too much time to do sometimes lol.

Love most of these trends because and glad to see the other trends are going out. One trend I am happy to let go is contouring because I never understood it. Hopefully I will get to also try other new trends like the copper eye lead
