How to choose the right concealer can be a bit of a daunting task, even I will admit that. For the longest time ever I was using the wrong shade concealer and looked like a walking scarecrow lol. This blog post is here to help you out so you don’t make the same mistakes I did.

How to Choose the Right Concealer
Choosing the right concealer first starts with determining your skin type, needs and concerns. For the undereye area, you want to go for a concealer shade that is one or two shades lighter than your skin complexion. I used a concealer that was a couple shades too light for the longest time and used to walk around with white circles around my eyes, don’t be like me lol.
I was using the LA Girl Pro Conceal HD High Definition Concealer in nude for a while (I cringe everytime I think back) before I realised that this is way too light for a dark skin girl like me. So always remember, whatever your skin complexion, one or two shades lighter to brighten up the undereye area is just right.
I have since found that the perfect concealer colour for me (like most black girls I know) is fawn (with the LA Girl range that is). You can never go wrong with this. It is light enough to give you that summer glow when contouring, but dark enough to not make you look like you have literal white circles around your eyes like I’d mentioned before.
If you are picking concealer for your face then you want to go for a shade that exactly matches your skin tone and complexion. The same way you pick a foundation shade is the same way you should be picking a concealer that you will be using sporadically on your face. For your face, you should ideally avoid concealers that are noticeably pink, rose, peach, white, yellow, or copper because they will definitely show through your foundation and make you look patchy.
If you are like me and love a good face contour every now and again then you may want to also purchase a concealer that is one or two shades darker than your actual skin complexion to help give you that chizzled and sculpted face. With the LA Girl range that perfect dark, yet not-too-dark concealer is the colour espresso.
In Summary
And there you have it! Picking a concealer does not have to be hard if (in summary) you follow the following steps:
- determine your skin type and needs
- pick a concealer that is at most two shades lighter for highlighting
- pick a concealer that has no noticeable undertones for your face
- pick a concealer that is at most two shades darker for sculpting

Ah damn! Forgot to get the darker one for countouring!
Believe it or not! I used to use fawn and i am waaay darker! We were in the same team and now we have found the light!
Hahaha I’m glad we have all found the light though!! 🙂
I desperately want fawn but am told am too light for it. ??? I haven’t found my perfect highlighter shade yet on the LA girl range mostly because its hard to find all shades being sold in Harare.
Agh no! But I feel like maybe nude would work for you cause of your light complexion. The easiest way to find the right shade is to first find a concealer that matches with your complexion and then go one/two up and down until you figure out what works.
i never knew this! Thank you for sharing i will take note of this the next time i go make up shopping. Just wondering does this apply to foundation as well?

I’m so glad you got something from this! And yes to an extent this does also apply to foundations. I can do a foundation post for you if you’d like 🙂
